Dental Implants in Canberra

Do have a gap in your smile that you’d like filled?

Compared to a bridge an implant replaces missing teeth through a procedure that involves placing a titanium post to your bone, and attaching the crown part of your tooth to it.

It’s a long process, usually taking about 3-6 months to allow bone integration. It may be a long process but the result is worthwhile, as at the end of the procedure, a tooth similar to your own will be replaced.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots (shaped like screws) inserted into the jaw bone. Artificial crowns are screwed into the implants and closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Implants offer many benefits as an alternative solution to replacing missing teeth. Implants:

  • Are fixed and secured in the jaw.
  • Are strong and can withstand greater chewing forces compared to dentures.
  • Prevent bone loss in the jaw – this may reduce the risk of adjacent natural teeth losing bone support.
  • Do not require any involvement of adjacent teeth, unlike bridges.

The Dental Implant Process

Your dentist will recommend what treatment is best for you based on examination and x-rays. If implant treatment is suitable for you, we will refer you to a gum specialist (periodontist) for the first stage of implant treatment. This is where the implant is inserted into the bone. Once this is completed and healed, the implant will be tested to ensure it is strong enough. You will then return to us for the second stage of implant treatment, where the crown is fitted into the implant.

The overall implant process can take a considerable amount of time, as we need to wait for healing of the bone and tissues. It can take from three to six months from placement of the implant to fitting of the crown.

Dental Implant FAQs

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants require the same care as your natural teeth including good brushing and flossing. Well-maintained implants are considered to be permanent, provided you have regular dental check-ups and cleaning.

Some factors that may contribute to implant failure include:

  • Lack of bone density and strength
  • The patient’s general health
  • Commitment to oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Habits such as clenching/grinding teeth.

Are dental implants painful?

Insertion of the implant into the jawbone requires minor surgery – and therefore comes with the expectation of some pain as you heal. Once the healing is completed, the fitting of the crown is normally comfortable, but you may experience some pressure on the gums as the crown is tightened.

How do you care for dental implants?

Implants, like natural teeth, require good hygiene and maintenance to ensure longevity. Effective brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to the dentist are important aspects to maintaining a healthy implant.
